Yoga Asanas

Mastering Yoga Asanas offers the third stage in traditional training in the 8 fold system prescribed by Patanjali.

The system of Asanas was developed through understanding that the attitude or the position of the body affects the mind just as a mental attitude reflects in the assumed physical stance or posture. What we now call “body language” in modern understanding is just a new awareness of an ancient principle. Aware of the intimate association between mind and body the Indian sages developed a system of Yoga Asanas to assist both physical and spiritual development and well being. Traditional training in Hatha Yoga encourages mastery of some or all of the 84 classic Asanas over a period of time. This demands skill in both strength and flexibility and assists in activating our full range of mental faculties.

Jnana Yoga – To Knowledge & Wisdom

Jnana Yoga (sometimes written Gnana) is the traditional path of consciously seeking to acquire knowledge. This may of course be applied to the limitless avenues that exist, but beyond any material sense, is directly related to spiritual matters and the yogi’s desire to experience spiritual truths.

We start on the path to wisdom by demonstrating and exercising our interest in life.

Exercising – The Yoga Way

The physical training system of Hatha Yoga is based upon the classic Asanas or static poses of the body although exercises for both development of strength and acquiring flexibility are included in the disciplines.

In regard to dynamic exercise, the standard Surya Namaskara or the Sun Salute is the traditional universal exercise consisting of 12 movements. The series of 12 positions is repeated a number of times as set by the teacher, usually 3 x, 7 x or 12 x are those given in the western school.  In Ashrams in India where concentration is given to healing the sick, patients are asked to perform the series an unlimited number of times – until the body breaks out in induced perspiration that is believed to be the beginning of a cure for most diseases.

Candle Meditation

The science of yoga teaches us that life is a great spiritual adventure. It has a beginning in the process of birth and has its seeming ending in the process of dying, our shared eventuality. These two processes are common to all and yet the cause of our coming into incarnation, the determined length of time each soul is here, and the circumstances that determine our departure all still remain mysterious. It is these unknowns that make the candle a suitable symbol for contemplation in any meditation upon spiritual life.

In this traditional yogic exercise there are several simple symbols considered prior to entering the meditative state when we seek to realize something of life’s mysteries…

History and Traditions of Yoga

Yoga is one of the 6 major Indian classical schools of philosophy within the ancient system of the Vedas. Although something is known of the development of some aspects of the yogic methodology and several great yogis are known to us from that early period, in the west we are humbled by the immensity of the coverage of subject matter in Vedic teachings. We would be overwhelmed by the studies necessary to understand in depth its wisdom. Nor are we in a position to fully evaluate the accumulated contributions made to the science over the thousands of years of its existence by the wise. Even Indian scholars find it difficult to penetrate the extent of its teaching and rely upon traditional legend to provide them with a basis for their insight and understanding.

The Vedas would seem to be the blanket wisdom teachings from antiquity which inherently possessed or perhaps gave birth to the methods for developing spiritual consciousness by which we identify the branch of the teaching known to us as Yoga.

Sun /Moon – Hatha Yoga Symbolism

The principle followed in the study of Hatha Yoga is that of balancing the two complementary energies that affect all life on earth including human. Perfect health is seen as a result of this balance. A similar principle is seen to be contained in the Chinese symbolism of Yang /Yin,by which the harmony of natural forces in the universe is maintained. A simple study of the characteristics confirms the validity of this principle regarding human nature.

Regarding the philosophy behind Hatha Yoga, it is understood that ideally, in perfect health, a male predominantly expresses the qualities attributed to the Sun and a female predominantly expresses the Moon qualities. So the male develops his body for outward expression of strength and power as the female exercises for flexibility and grace in her natural physical expression.

About Our Emotions

We are referring to the emotional states of feeling contentment, happiness, joy, pain, suffering, sympathy, kindness, anger, envy, jealousy, compassion, irritation, fear, faith, anxiety, hatred, love, yearning, desire, pride, and many others in our emotional range. We all find the seeds of every possible human emotion inherent in our nature. It is a case of what emotions we have chosen to cultivate as to their expression in our personality.

There are less attractive or basic emotions that must be pulled out like we do weeds in the garden. Others that are more attractive, and help us to feel good inside take more careful nurturing but the rewards are obvious. As each of us makes different choices in selection and in methods of cultivation, our emotional nature develops accordingly. We have emotional energies that are uniquely available for our expression according to our character and purposes.

Types of Meditation

When considering Yogic meditation, there are three main types –

Sthula Dhyana – meditation on an outer form employing trataka or gazing upon a material focus such as a flower or sacred object, one that is beautiful or uplifting to awaken spiritual thought and aspiration.

Yoga Paths – The Margas

The eight-fold system of Patanjali known as Asthanga defines the stages by which the aspirant may grow to spiritual enlightenment.  These principles provide the classical guidelines for all spiritual development.

Margas are simply the different paths or approaches towards study and practices of Yoga.

Each offers a variety of techniques and disciplines. They are considered as spokes on the wheel of Yoga with the hub common to all. All the paths aim to lead the student to experience the reality of God.
